How do I enroll my child at South Summit Elementary School?

We are thrilled to welcome new members to our community! Please visit our Registration page for information about enrolling your child at one of our schools. If you would like to enroll in our PreK classes, please visit our PreK registration page.

When should my child arrive at school, and what are the procedures?

We highly encourage students to arrive at school to have a consistent and positive start to their day. We are so happy to see all of our students each day and want them to feel welcome and acknowledged as the teachers, staff, and classmates greet them.

When the bell rings at 8:50 a.m., students line up at their designated class spot, and teachers come out to greet and gather students. To keep all students safe, we do not allow parents/guardians on any blacktop surface before or after school. Students may not enter areas of the school building other than the cafeteria before 8:50 a.m. unless they participate in breakfast. Breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria. We provide outside supervision 15 minutes before the beginning of school. Students should not arrive on the school grounds before 8:35 a.m. unless they eat breakfast.

What are the school policies for student absences and tardies?

Daily attendance is crucial for academic success. Therefore, the following is in place:

  1. After three tardies, the school will contact the parent/guardian regarding the number of tardies.
  2. After five tardies, we will notify the parent or guardian and provide a learning video and template for change. If tardies persist, the administration will contact the parent for a Student Growth Plan meeting.
  3. After three unexcused absences, the school will notify the parent/guardian.
  4. If unexcused absences exceed five, we will contact the student’s parents, send home a Notice of Compulsory Education Violation, and schedule a meeting with the administration.
  5. After 10 consecutive days of absence, if we have not heard from the parent, we will send a Notice of Compulsory Education Violation, notify DCFS, and unenroll the student.
What if I want to visit the school?

We are proud of our school and welcome visitors to share in our pride. However, for the safety and well-being of students and staff, all volunteers and visitors must check in at the office and pick up a visitor badge. Visitors and volunteers must have a specified purpose and an approved or scheduled appointment. All visitors and volunteers must be fingerprinted. The South Summit School District Office must document fingerprinting.

What are the school bus policies at South Summit schools?

Please do not have your child arrive at a bus stop more than five minutes before the bus arrives. Remind your child that bus-riding pupils are under the authority of the bus driver. Our bus drivers share the mutual interest of parents and staff for the child’s safety and should be given due respect by all students.

Bus rules include:

  • Speak kind words to each other.
  • Keep hands, feet, and objects to self.
  • Be on time for the bus, but no earlier than five minutes before bus time.
  • Keep hands, arms, head, and objects inside bus windows.
  • Talk in quiet tones so the driver can hear.
  • Eating and drinking on the bus is not allowed.

Bus safety protocol includes:

  • If you miss the bus, go directly home. Have a family plan for this possibility.
  • Stand a safe distance from the curb.
  • Get in line when the school bus is approaching, and be ready to board the bus.
  • Remain seated when the bus is in motion.
  • Leave the bus only at your regular bus stop.
  • Always have a plan of where to go if parents are not home after school.

Bus discipline policies include:

  • Students who violate bus behavior expectations will receive an office referral. We will then investigate using our discipline protocol.
  • A severe offense or continued office referrals for severe misconduct or behavior will lead to a loss of bus privileges for a specific number of days.
  • Please note that all corrective actions and consequences will be implemented case by case.

  • The medication must have a physician-provided statement regarding the administration route and the dosage the student is to take.
  • The parent or guardian must provide authorization for school personnel to allow the student to self-medicate.
  • All medications must be brought in the original pharmacy-labeled container.
  • No over-the-counter drugs can be administered without a prescription.
  • See the medication policy in the district manual for more information.
What are the immunization policies for enrollment?

Utah state law requires that students be current with immunizations or excluded from school until they comply or have an immunization exemption form on file (parents may obtain exemption forms at the local health department).

Student release/check-out info: Due to heightened security measures, we may not release students to anyone other than their parent/legal guardian listed on the school emergency form in PowerSchool unless the school has received prior written notice. Parents must sign children out at the school office. Parents may not retrieve students from any part of the building or playground. Parents, please go to the office where we will call your child for you for pickup. We will release a student to a parent or guardian only when that person is the one designated as the one permitted to pick up the child in the PowerSchool system. We provide this documentation when the parent and/or guardian completes the online registration.

As a safety measure for your child, please ensure your information is accurate and up to date, as we cannot violate this policy. If circumstances in your family are such that student safety is a concern, proper and notarized court documentation must be on file in the office at the elementary school. School officials will comply with up-to-date court documentation and legal designation of child custody. Please note: We encourage parents to change their child’s pick-up or bus riding needs before 3:00 p.m. M–TH or 2:00 p.m. Friday to avoid delays or problems.

What is the cell phone and electronic device policy at South Summit Elementary?

To avoid disruption during the school day and protect all students’ privacy rights, we allow Apple watches and other electronic devices used to communicate (send or receive) signals only under the following conditions:

  • Students must store their phones in their assigned school lockers and turn them off during school hours. They may only call a guardian from the front office telephone. They can not use a teacher’s cell phone, classroom phone, or personal electronic device.
  • Students may wear watches with phone abilities but not use the phone feature during school hours (8:50 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.).
  • Students may only use cell phones/electronic devices after school is over.
